April is a month full of learning, creativity, and meaningful connections in early childhood education. At Skippy’s Early Learning, with campuses in Gracemere, Rockhampton, and Yeppoon in Central Queensland and the Capricorn Coast area, we love exploring hands-on experiences that spark curiosity and understanding.

From the excitement of Easter activities to the thoughtful reflections of Anzac Day, here are some wonderful ways to bring learning to life in early childhood settings.

Easter Excitement: Learning Through Play

Easter is a fantastic time to explore creativity, problem-solving, and storytelling with children. Beyond the chocolate eggs, there are many ways to bring Easter into early learning experiences:

🐰 Easter Sensory Play – Create a "Bunny Burrow" sensory bin with shredded paper "grass," plastic eggs, and little rabbit figurines for children to explore. Add some scented playdough (vanilla or cocoa powder) for extra sensory fun!

🎨 Egg-cellent Art & Craft – Encourage creativity with egg-decorating activities using paint, stickers, and natural dyes. Children can also make Easter bunny masks or handprint chick paintings.

🔢 Math with Eggs – Use plastic Easter eggs for number-matching games or a fun Easter egg hunt where children solve simple counting or sorting challenges to find the hidden treasures.

📖 Easter Storytime & Literacy Fun – Read stories like We're Going on an Egg Hunt or The Tale of Peter Rabbit and encourage children to act out the characters. This helps develop language skills and imagination!

🌿 Nature-Based Egg Hunts – Take the fun outside! Hide eggs with nature-themed clues or ask children to collect leaves, flowers, or natural items that match different colours of eggs.

Honouring Anzac Day: Teaching Respect & Reflection

Anzac Day (April 25th) is an important opportunity to teach children about history, bravery, and the values of respect and remembrance in a meaningful, age-appropriate way.

🌺 Poppy Craft & Symbolism – Help children create red poppies using paper or cupcake liners and discuss their meaning.

📜 Storytelling & Simple Anzac Stories – Read books like Anzac Ted or Lest We Forget to introduce the idea of remembrance through gentle storytelling.

🍪 Anzac Biscuit Baking – Engage children in a cooking experience by making traditional Anzac biscuits, discussing how these were once sent to soldiers. It’s a fun way to combine history with hands-on learning.

🎶 Music & Reflection – Teach a simple version of "The Last Post" on chime bars or bells, or sing I Am Australian to help children connect with the meaning of Anzac Day through music.

👣 Nature Walk of Remembrance – Take a quiet walk outside, allowing children to collect nature items and talk about peace, kindness, and appreciation for those who came before us.

At Skippy’s Early Learning in Gracemere, Rockhampton, and Yeppoon, April is a time to explore traditions, creativity, and reflection with our children. Whether celebrating the joy of Easter or learning about the significance of Anzac Day, we embrace opportunities to nurture curiosity and respect in our little learners.

Through storytelling, hands-on experiences, and engaging discussions, children can develop a deeper understanding of these special occasions in ways that are meaningful to them.

April is a beautiful balance of celebration, learning, and reflection, helping to build strong foundations for lifelong learning.

How are you celebrating April with your children this year? 🐣🌺
